Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book desc: Harry T. Burn’s great-grandnephew chronicles the life and legacy of the Tennessee legend who helped ratify the 19th Amendment. After reading a letter from his mother, Burn cast the deciding vote to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting suffrage rights to millions of American women. Born and raised in McMinn County, he served in Tennessee government in various capacities for many years, including terms in the state senate and as delegate to state constitutional conventions. His accomplishments include helping secure universal suffrage rights, drafting clean election laws and leading successful careers in law and banking. He encountered more controversies in his career, such as an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid, election fraud and implementation of state legislative reapportionment. “In this deeply researched biography, Tyler L. Boyd finally brings us the full man, putting into context Burn’s singular act of conscience, helping us to understand how one person can make a difference.” —Elaine Weiss, author of The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote “The story of what happened before and after Burn’s fateful vote has been told often but often told wrong. [This book] gives us the real story, one well worth remembering as we commemorate the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in August 1920, courtesy of the Volunteer State.” —Marjorie J. Spruill, author of Divided We Stand and One Woman, One Vote

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book desc: As Spain consolidated its Empire in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, discourses about the perfect Spanish man or "Vir" went hand-in-hand with discourses about another kind of man, one who engaged in the "abominable crime and sin against nature"—sodomy. In both Spain and Mexico, sodomy came to rank second only to heresy as a cause for prosecution, and hundreds of sodomites were tortured, garroted, or burned alive for violating Spanish ideals of manliness. Yet in reality, as Federico Garza Carvajal argues in this groundbreaking book, the prosecution of sodomites had little to do with issues of gender and was much more a concomitant of empire building and the need to justify political and economic domination of subject peoples. Drawing on previously unpublished records of some three hundred sodomy trials conducted in Spain and Mexico between 1561 and 1699, Garza Carvajal examines the sodomy discourses that emerged in Andalucía, seat of Spain's colonial apparatus, and in the viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico), its first and largest American colony. From these discourses, he convincingly demonstrates that the concept of sodomy (more than the actual practice) was crucial to the Iberian colonizing program. Because sodomy opposed the ideal of "Vir" and the Spanish nationhood with which it was intimately associated, the prosecution of sodomy justified Spain's domination of foreigners (many of whom were represented as sodomites) in the peninsula and of "Indios" in Mexico, a totally subject people depicted as effeminate and prone to sodomitical acts, cannibalism, and inebriation.

At age eighteen, as part of the Bidwell-Bartleson Party (one of the first wagon trains to cross the Oregon Trail), Thomas leaves Independence, Missouri, for Oregon, with the goal of making a land claim, establishing a sawmill, and building a home for his future wife, who will follow along with his brother in two years. You could say Thomas’s life in the Oregon Country was extraordinary, but not the stuff of legends—until the morning of September 13, 1902, when at the age of seventy-nine he hitched up his wagon and headed east into an oncoming fire to help save the lives of his neighbors and friends. The fire, now known as the Yacolt Burn, was one of the largest forest fires in US history. This is the story of Thomas Merriman, hero of the Yacolt Burn!

But the calm of the little village is about to be shattered by a wealthy stranger who bursts into flame by the side of the road--and then disappears! The townspeople begin muttering about witchcraft and the devil's hand, casting suspicious glances at a local Frenchman. Was it murder, or an elaborate scheme? And, with two mysterious deaths to follow and a tavern full of superstitious rabble, will Charlotte and Longfellow uncover the answers before it's too late?
