This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book desc: This book is an invitation to academic administrators, at every level, to engage in reflection on the ethical dimensions of their working lives. Academics are very good at reflecting on the ethical issues in other professions but not so interested in reflecting on those in their own, including those faced by faculty and administrators. Yet it is a topic of great importance. Academic institutions are value-driven; hence virtually every decision made by an academic administrator has an ethical component with implications for students, faculty, the institution, and the broader community. Despite this, they receive little systematic preparation for this aspect of their professional lives when they take up administrative posts, especially when compared to, say, medical or legal training. Surprisingly little has been written about the ethical challenges that academic administrators are likely to face. Most of the literature relating to academic administration focuses on “leadership” and draws heavily on management and social science theory. The importance of focusing on ethical deliberation and decision-making often goes unrecognized.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book desc: Representation theory, and more generally Lie theory, has played a very important role in many of the recent developments of mathematics and in the interaction of mathematics with physics. In August-September 1989, a workshop (Third Workshop on Representation Theory of Lie Groups and its Applications) was held in the environs of C6rdoba, Argentina to present expositions of important recent developments in the field that would be accessible to graduate students and researchers in related fields. This volume contains articles that are edited versions of the lectures (and short courses) given at the workshop. Within representation theory, one of the main open problems is to determine the unitary dual of a real reductive group. Although this prob lem is as yet unsolved, the recent work of Barbasch, Vogan, Arthur as well as others has shed new light on the structure of the problem. The article of D. Vogan presents an exposition of some aspects of this prob lem, emphasizing an extension of the orbit method of Kostant, Kirillov. Several examples are given that explain why the orbit method should be extended and how this extension should be implemented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book desc: Phenomenology as practised by Adolf Reinach ( 1883-191 7) in his all too brief philosophical career exemplifies all the virtues of Husserl's Logical Investigations. It is sober, concerned to be clear and deals with specific problems. It is therefore understandable that, in a philosophical climate in which Husserl's masterpiece has come to be regarded as a mere stepping stone on the way to his later Phenomeno logy, or even to the writings of a Heidegger, Reinach's contributions to exact philo sophy have been all but totally forgotten. The topics on which Reinach wrote most illuminatingly, speech acts (which he called 'social acts') and states of affairs (Sachverhalte ), as well as his realism about the external world, have come to be regarded as the preserve of other traditions of exact philosophy. Like my fellow contributors, I hope that the present volume will go some way towards correcting this unfortunate historical accident. Reinach's account of judgements and states of affairs, an account that precedes those of Russell and Wittgenstein, his 1913 treatment of speech acts, his reinter pretation of Hume and aspects of his legal philosophy are the main philosophical topics dealt with in what follows. But his analysis of deliberation as well as his work on movement and Zeno's paradoxes get only a passing mention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book desc: The museum of contemporary art might be the most advanced recording device ever invented. It is a place for the storage of historical grievances and the memory of forgotten artistic experiments, social projects, or errant futures. But in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Russia, this recording device was undertaken by artists and thinkers as a site for experimentation. Arseny Zhilyaev’s Avant-Garde Museology presents essays documenting the wildly encompassing progressivism of this period by figures such as Nikolai Fedorov, Aleksandr Rodchenko, Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Bogdanov, and others—many which are translated from the Russian for the first time. Here the urgent question is: How might the contents of the museum be reanimated so as to transcend even the social and physical limits imposed on humankind?
